SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - One person is dead after their vehicle stuck a power pole early Wednesday near Siesta Key Beach, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash occurred just after 2 a.m. on Beach Road, just west of Midnight Pass Road in front of Siesta Key Beach. The Florida Highway Patrol says the sedan was driving in a curve west of Avenida and Del Mare at a high rate of speed. The driver, a 23-year-old male from Sarasota, lost control and collided with a utility pole and a tree before overturning.

A passenger in the car sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

Beach Road was shut down until almost 7:30 a.m., the sheriff’s office said. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
